Stanford Stadium is the open-air home of Cardinal football on the university’s Palo Alto campus. Although football has been played on the site since 1921, the present stadium is a complete 2006 rebuild: a tighter, smaller bowl replaced the sprawling historic structure.
Bowl and seating
The current capacity is about 50,400, roughly half that of the old stadium. Bringing the seats closer to the field improved views and atmosphere without abandoning the simple open-bowl character. Most seats are exposed to the sun, and early-season afternoon games can be warm even when the wider Bay Area forecast looks mild.
The north end includes The Archway, a gathering area beneath the stadium arches with food, drinks and social space. Concessions are cashless, and grab-and-go or checkout-free locations can be faster than the main stands during a short college-football halftime.
A historic site with a modern building
The original Stanford Stadium opened in 1921 as a large earthen bowl. It was demolished and rebuilt on the same footprint in less than a year, reopening for the 2006 season at a cost of about $90 million. The result is often described as a renovation, but the spectator structure itself is new.
The stadium hosted matches during the 1994 FIFA World Cup and field hockey during the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. The annual Big Game against California remains its defining recurring date.
Getting there
The stadium is at 625 Nelson Road on the east side of campus. Parking is distributed across campus lots and fields, with event-specific permits and traffic routes. The wooded campus is walkable but large; allow time if your assigned lot is on the far side of the venue.
Caltrain’s Palo Alto station is the main rail option. The walk is roughly 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the route and crowd. Bicycles are common on campus, but event security and temporary closures can change where they may be left.

Planning note
